Linda Edna Cardellini (n e Lorraine (Hernan), was born to Wayne David Cardellini (a businessman) in Redwood City. Her parents are Italian (from a paternal grandfather), Irish (from a mother), German and English. Linda, California's youngest child is a native of her home in the San Francisco Bay Area. In her tenth year, she began to be attracted to acting after performing in school plays. The school play she performed in was and in local theatres. Linda went to Saint Francis High School, Mountain View in California. After she graduated she had to make a decision which one she would prefer to relocate to New York or Los Angeles to study theatre. After graduating, she had to decide whether or not to pursue a career in film or television in Los Angeles. Linda's debut role was the series in 1996 Bone Chillers. In 1999, she was offered her first role of major importance as Lindsay Weir, a character from the popular series Freaks and Geeks. In the critically acclaimed show, she was a decathlete Lindsay Weir. The show won an Emmy Award under the category of Outstanding Casting Comedy Series.

Her acting career began in the year the year 2010 when she appeared in the British television show Just William, in which she attended London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Cinderella (2015) is her debut film after she portrayed Lady Rose MacClare (2012-2015) in Downton Abbey which was a period television drama. James later played the role of the Countess Natasha Rostova as part of the TV adaptation of War & Peace (2016). She also starred in several films, like Baby Driver (2017) and The Dig -2021. and Here We Go Again (2018) and Yesterday (2019). Her portrayal of Pamela Anderson for the biographical show Pam & Tommy in 2022 was recognized with Golden Globes as well as Primetime Emmy Awards.
